From the sierras
Living off the land
A simple life with no luxuries
Our land?
Our rights?
Like animals cast aside
Our traditions matter none
A hunger strike
To alert the world
We are the indigenous
From the sierras
process notes:
There is a horrible
situation going on in the state of Oaxaca.
The indigenous have no rights.

Mary, if you read the article you will see just how sad it is. The state police are even afraid to enter the village,
ReplyDeletePamela
Diane in Oaxaca it is a travesty, I hope the powers of the world stop this! Many of these people have no running water or electricity.

Oh thank you, Pamela, for this poem and this link, raising awareness about the plight of the indigenous peoples of Oaxaca. The indigenous everywhere are so threatened. One more excellent perspective on what turns out to be IN-equality on this planet. This has been a consciousness-raising session for all of us, great prompt, hey?
ReplyDeleteSherry, it is horrible what is happening to these people and it seems until the higher powers set up and take over it will continue, I used to work in that small village about 5 years ago. I hate to think that some of my former students are some of those people, it just breaks my heart. This prompt was excellent!

Ongoing struggle of whose rights, whose land, us never giving up more than we have to, giving up nothing at all if we can get away with it. It all seems so pointless - ask an earthquake or other natural disaster who owns what land...
ReplyDeleteRuth these people do not have a thing and the government wants more. Land their families have lived on for generations etc ...
ReplyDeleteIt is a sad situation.
Pamela
Pamela,
ReplyDeleteA very true and living story of inequality.
I have been to visit an Indian settlement at Neah Bay, near Port Townsend, Washington State USA. I was shocked with what I saw, as suitable living conditions, in this age.

It is horrible Eileen,
